The radiator is a vital part of your car but doesn’t usually get the attention it deserves. Its components can wear out or get damaged, and a failing radiator will cause your engine to overheat. If you have a radiator problem, your Honda dealer can fix it for you. These are a few signs that you may need a radiator repair.

Coolant Leak

One of the most obvious signs of a radiator problem is a pool of colored liquid underneath your car. Your Honda has a variety of fluids, but coolant is easily identifiable as its pink, yellow, blue, or green. This fluid has the vital role of absorbing engine heat and transferring it to the radiator for removal. The cooling system operates under high pressure, and even a small hole can cause a rapid loss of coolant.

Coolant can leak from many different places, including a crack in the radiator or worn rubber hoses. As the coolant level falls, your engine temperature will rapidly rise. If you find a pool of coolant underneath your car, call our service department ASAP. We’ll trace the source of the leak and fix it; then we’ll refill the coolant.

Damaged Water Pump

As we’ve seen, coolant moves through your engine at high speed. Speed is essential, as the coolant must prevent the heat from accumulating in your engine and causing damage. The coolant is released when your engine’s internal temperature reaches a pre-set point. The flow of coolant only stops when your engine’s temperature drops below the pre-set point.

The water pump is responsible for pumping the coolant through your engine. If the pump fails, coolant can’t move through the engine, and the temperature will rapidly increase. The pump might not be broken, as a blown fuse or damaged wiring will stop it from working. Our technicians will need to examine the pump and repair or replace it.

Cracked Radiator

The radiator is the heart of the cooling system. Hot coolant enters the radiator tubes, and the heat is removed by heat exchange with the outside air. A radiator is made from aluminum and plastic to reduce the weight at the front of your car. The temperature inside the radiator routinely reaches over 300 F, and this level of heat combined with pressure can cause damage.

Cracks can slowly develop in plastic, and coolant will leak out. We can’t repair a cracked radiator, but we can replace it with a new one to fix the problem.
