Your transmission is one of the hardest working components in your Honda. It works continually from when your engine starts to transfer power from the engine to your wheels. On average, your transmission will experience more wear than any other car component. If your transmission has a problem, your Honda dealer can fix it for you. These are a few signs you may need a transmission repair.

Slipping Gears

When your transmission shifts on the instructions of your transmission computer, it should stay in the assigned gear until the computer shifts it again. A slipping transmission is a situation where your transmission will unexpectedly shift back to the previous gear it was in. This can be dangerous, especially if you’re driving at speed when it happens.

If your transmission experiences slipping gears, we need to examine it right away before further damage is caused. Your Honda transmission has a safety feature where the transmission will default to a single gear. The transmission won’t shift from this gear until it’s been repaired. This safe gear will enable you to reach our service department, where we’ll find the cause of the problem and fix it.

Jerking and Shaking

A healthy transmission moves smoothly and effortlessly between gears. If you start to experience a jerking feeling when the transmission shifts, this is a sign that your transmission has a problem. The jerking will grow stronger and eventually give way to a shaking or trembling sensation. There are several possible causes for this problem, including a lack of fluid or worn transmission mounts.

The transmission is attached to your car’s frame by two liquid-filled mounts. These mounts secure the transmission and also dissipate the movements it generates. Without these mounts, the transmission could shake itself apart. Damage to one or both of the mounts can cause the jerking behavior. A lack of transmission fluid can also cause strange behavior in the transmission. Our technicians will examine your transmission to find the problem.

Check Engine Light Comes On

Although it’s known as the check engine light, the light will illuminate in response to any problem in the transmission. Your engine and transmission are physically connected by the torque converter. Sensors connect to your car’s vital systems and provide information to your car’s computer.

If a problem occurs in your transmission, one of the sensors will detect it, and the engine light will switch on. We’ll connect your car’s computer to our Honda diagnostic system, which will identify the problem. Once we know what’s caused the problem, we’ll repair it.
